SANTA ROSA — Cal State Stanislaus golfer Jonathan Cockerill had the best round of the day at the Sonoma State Men's Invitational at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.

Cockerill, a sophomore from Carson City, Nev., shot a round three best five-under 67 on Tuesday to help the Warriors close out the tournament in style. Cal State Stanislaus moved up from 10th place after Monday's play to finish fifth in the team standings. Cockerill's 67 is the tournament's second lowest score with two 66's turned-in on Monday. The Warriors had the lowest team score on Tuesday with a 277, which is seven strokes better than winner Chico State.

"The team has learned to compete at this level with our youthfulness," Stanislaus head coach John Cook said. "J.T. (Cockerill) had a great day today and so did some of the other kids."

Three other Warriors all shot under-par scores for the comeback run. Teddy Schrier carded a 69 to finish with a two-under 214 for the 54-hole tournament. He finished ninth to give the Warriors two top 10 finishers for the first time this fall. Danny Hoff had a 71 for an one-over 217 final and Trevor Blair was two-under in round three to finish with a 222.

Both the single round 277 and the tournament total of 864 are season-bests for the Warriors.

The Chico State men’s golf team got a little revenge on Sonoma State on Tuesday for the win. It was just a week ago that the Seawolves beat Chico at their own tournament, the InterWest Chico Classic. Tuesday’s victory was the second consecutive SSU Invite title for the ninth-ranked Wildcats.

Sonoma State's Kevin Horan took individual medalist honors with a 66-70-70—206, holding off Ian Gilley of Rollins College (69-70-68—207) and Jarin Todd of Sonoma State (69-67-72—208). The Wildcats packed two more golfers in the top five as Lucas Delgado (70-71-70—211) finished fourth and Brandon Harkins (68-71-73—212) finished fifth.

Cal State Stanislaus has completed its fall season and will not compete again until Feb. 23 at the Cal State Bakersfield Spring Invitational.
