PATTERSON — Cal State Stanislaus'
Andy Moren captured individual medalist honors on Tuesday as he defeated a field of Division I players at the Drake Intercollegiate at Diablo Grande Golf Club in Patterson.
Erick Justesen finished fourth in leading the Warriors men's golf team to a third place finish in a field of mainly Division I programs. The tournament was hosted by Drake University and won by Loyola College of Maryland.
The Warriors' third place finish was the team's fifth consecutive top-three placing and sixth during the 2007-08 season.
Moren, who was playing as an individual in this week's tournament, rebounded from a rough spring season thus far to win the event with an even par 216. This was his best finish since finishing second in the fall at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate in Hawaii. Last week he shot a 9-over 225 at the NDNU Invitational to finish 19th in his only Spring appearance.
Moren started the tournament with a 79 in round one where a number of high scores were posted. Moren, however, shot a 67 in round two and finished the tournament with a 70 on Tuesday to win by five strokes. Loyola's Chris Derby and Austin Peay State's Erik Barnes each carded a 221 to finish tied for second.
Stanislaus senior Justesen was fourth with a 223. Also in the top 20 were
Ryan Nickell (233, tied-15th) and
Ben Van Vuren (234, t17).
Jason McHargue (238) and
Jesse Contreras (247) round out the Warrior scoring.
The tournament featured nine Division I programs with Stanislaus the only DII team and Cal State San Marcos representing Division III.
