Turlock, Calif. – The Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer team followed up a strong training camp and pre-season with a dominating 9-2 win over visiting Northwest Nazarene University, Thursday at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.  With the win, the Warriors continue their undefeated streak in season opening games.  Since 1998 they are 10-0-1 in season openers.

The Warriors were extremely aggressive offensively throughout the whole game, scoring five times in the first half and four more times in the second half.  Seven different Warriors notched goals, with Bri McClain and Adrienne Sorenson scoring two each.

The Warriors first got on the board in the 19th minute of action when Sorenson took a nice lead pass from Rachel Mathews, found herself one on one versus the Crusader goalkeeper and after a nice juke move, punched it in for the goal.  Just three minutes later, McClain took the same kind of pass from Vanessa Cervantes and was able to squeeze a shot through the goalkeepers legs to make it 2-0.

The Warriors would score three more times in the first half.  Jade Adamson, Marissa Dunaway and Kim Dinardo each found the back of the net.  The Warriors took a 5-1 lead into halftime, but they did not let up in the second half.

McClain and Sorenson each scored again in the second half, while Tiffani Moore and Maryanne Sayles also joined the scoring parade.  They would eventually pull out a 9-2 victory.

Whitney Teague and Molly Tipton each scored goals for the Crusaders who were out shot by the Warriors, 24-9.

“Strong competition in the preseason helped us come into the opener in good shape, with a positive outlook and strong senior leadership”, said head coach Gabe Bolton.  “The players did a great job of finishing plays today and our back line (Kaity Bojorquez, Vanessa Cervantes, Rachel Mathews and Heather Overholt), did an excellent job communicating and controlling the game,” Bolton added.  This was especially encouraging because the Warriors were without the services of All-CCAA defender Melissa Phillips who was serving a suspension for picking up her fifth caution in the last game of the 2007 season.

“It was good to start the season on a positive note, but now we have to get prepared for a very good San Marcos team on Sunday,” said Bolton.

The Warriors will travel to CSU San Marcos on Sunday and then return home to face Hawaii-Hilo, Friday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.
