Jasimen Bailey has received one of the highest honors as a female student-athlete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The former Cal State Stanislaus track and field standout has been named among the top 30 honorees for the 2009 NCAA Woman of the Year award that will be presented next week.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.

Bailey will be accompanied by Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator Kim Duyst at the reception and awards ceremony on October 18 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

"Jasimen is an outstanding young woman who has contributed to California State University Stanislaus not only on the athletic field but also in the classroom and the community," Duyst said. "She is very deserving of the nomination for the award and we are proud of her being selected in the top 30."

Bailey, who completed her athletic eligibility last Spring, was a NCAA Championship qualifier in the discus in 2009 and was All-Conference twice in shot put and twice in discus. In addition, she earn the CCAA Co-Freshman of the Year award in 2006. Bailey now holds the CSU Stanislaus record in discus, shot put in outdoor track, as well as records for indoor shot put and weight throw. In 2009, she was named the Warriors' track athlete of the year and was a finalist for the University's top female athlete of the year.

Away from competition, the Tulare native has served on various campus committees, volunteered at a number of charities and was actively involved in community service projects among other CSUS students and student-athletes.

Academically, Bailey made the Dean's list twice, posted a 3.31 grade point average as a sociology major and made the Alpha Kappa Delta Sociological Honor Society.

Bailey is one of 10 Division II and one of two student-athletes from the California Collegiate Athletic Association to be included in the top 30 honorees.

A committee composed of representatives from NCAA member schools and conferences selected the top 30 honorees – 10 from each division – from a pool of 132 conference nominees, which included seven student-athletes from independent institutions, representing all three NCAA divisions and multiple sports. The top 30 will be trimmed to nine finalists – three from each division – and the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will select the national winner from that pool of finalists.

The 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year was Tennessee women’s basketball standout Nkolika Anosike.
