TURLOCK — Senior pitcher
Eric Cendejas grew up in Orange County as an Angels fan. On Wednesday, during the third day of the MLB First-Year Players Draft, Cendejas was selected in the 33rd round by his hometown team.
Cendejas, who was born in Anaheim, grew up in Corona and played two seasons at nearby Santa Ana College, became the fifth Cal State Stanislaus player to be drafted in the last three years. The Los Angeles Angels picked the right-hander pitcher in the 33rd round and the 1,014th pick overall.
He completed a two-year career at Cal State Stanislaus as one of the top pitchers on the staff. He and the Warriors ranked second in the CCAA in team ERA in 2010.
Cendejas posted a 3.93 ERA with a 5-7 record, plus three saves. He struck out 63 in 66 1/3 innings. During his junior season, he set a school record with a 1.80 ERA. In 19 appearances he posted a 4-1 mark with five saves. He fanned 33 in 35 innings of work.
Cendejas is the second player from the California Collegiate Athletic Association to be picked up by the Angels. The Angels picked Jesus Campos of Cal State L.A. in the 24th round on Tuesday. Cendejas is the seventh CCAA player, and 10th total, selected in this year's draft.
Last year, three Warriors --
Dakota Watts,
Kyle Loretelli and
Eric Federico -- were drafted and in 2008, Marquis Fleming was a 24th round pick of Tampa Bay.
