Stanislaus women picked fifth in CCAA North

WALNUT CREEK —Defending conference champion Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego have been selected as the favorites to capture the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's soccer title following a vote of league coaches, it was announced on Wednesday.

NCAA Division II National Runner-Up Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chico State were selected to win their respective divisions.

Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego garnered four votes apiece to win the CCAA Tournament, while Cal State Dominguez received three votes and Chico State tallied one vote.

Chico State, coming off an 8-6-9 overall record in 2009, is picked to repeat as North Division champions after receiving 63 points and eight first-place votes. Sonoma State finished second with 56 points and four first-place votes. Humboldt State (40) was third and followed by San Francisco State (36), Cal State Stanislaus (33) and Cal State Monterey Bay (17).

After advancing to the national championship match for the first time in program history, Cal State Dominguez Hills enters the upcoming season as the favorite to capture the South Division title after collecting 59 points and six first-place votes. Defending conference champion Cal State L.A. placed second in the balloting after totaling 55 points and four first-place votes. UC San Diego finished third after garnering 54 points and two first-place votes.

Cal State San Bernardino (34) was fourth in the voting and followed by Cal Poly Pomona (28) and Cal State East Bay (16).

A total of seven teams received votes in balloting to determine the participants for the CCAA Tournament that is scheduled for Nov. 5-7 at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock.

Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. each collected 11 votes, while Chico State and UC San Diego tallied nine votes apiece. Sonoma State picked up five votes, Cal State San Bernardino received two votes and Humboldt State was named on one ballot.

Three CCAA teams begin the 2010 campaign ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason national rankings. Cal State Dominguez Hills opens the season ranked No. 4, while Cal State L.A. is No. 14 and UC San Diego is No. 20.
 
Cal State East Bay will be the first CCAA team to open its season when it hosts Dominican on Sept. 24. Conference play is slated to begin on Fri., Sept. 10 when all 12 teams are in action.
