In 1979 and 1980 Mike won the individual national championship at the NCAA Division III championship tournament, while also leading the warriors to team championships. In 1979 Mike advanced to the NCAA Division I national tournament where he placed third, the highest finish ever for a non-Division I athlete. Mike was a three time All American, three time All Conference performer, and was Far Western Conference Most Valuable Player in 1980. Following a successful career on the PGA tour Mike has earned the distinction of being named by Golf digest as one of the top 100 teaching professionals. In 1999 Mike was appointed Director of Golf at the Professional golfers Hall of Fame in Sarasota, Florida. At the time of his induction Mike still holds the CSUS all time single season scoring record for an average 75.21 strokes per round.
