As a team co-captain in 1976 and 1977 Rusty helped lead Warrior baseball to the NCAA Division III National Championships two years in a row. In 1977 he batted .397, led the nation in home runs and was named First Team All American. He was the World Series Most Valuable Player, Stanislaus State Athlete of the Year, and Sportsmen of Stanislaus Athlete of the Year. He was also team MVP in 1976. Leaving college for a distinguished career in professional baseball, Rusty played with the Chicago White Sox, the Minnesota Twins and was a member of the 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers. He has since coached for a number of major league teams including the Seattle Mariners and the Florida Marlins.
