Nampa, Idaho – The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team split a doubleheader against host Northwest Nazarene University, Friday in Nampa, Idaho. The split moves the 11th ranked Warriors to 22-7 on the season, the Crusaders are now 14-10.
The Crusaders broke game one open early, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits in the second inning. Warrior starter Eric Federico (3-2) was gave up six hits, hit two batters and was charged with seven earned runs in one and one third inning pitched. Reliever Ryan Morehouse surrendered the final three runs of the inning.
The Warriors were able to score four runs in the top of the third, using a walk, a hit batsman, two hits and four wild pitches to cut into the lead. However, the Crusaders scored four more runs over the next two innings to open the game up. The Warriors scored four more runs over the last three innings, but the comeback fell short as they left the bases loaded to end the game.
Junior Jeff Hughes led the Warrior offense in game one, hitting a double and a homerun and driving in three runs.
In game two the Warriors were finally able to put all the pieces together. Freshman Andy Stueve (3-1) led the way pitching a complete game, scattering eight hits and surrendering just one earned run.
The Warriors got on the board first scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning. David Contreras and Jake Oketani started the game with back to back singles. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Kyle Loretelli grounded out to plate Contreras. Jeff Hughes singled home Oketani with two outs to finish the scoring.
The Warriors broke open the game in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. The key hits were a two RBI double from Josh Lewis and a two RBI single from Adam Fonville.
In game two, Kyle Loretelli, Josh Lewis, Jeff Hughes and Adam Fonville each had two hits. Lewis and Fonville both collected three runs batted in.
The Warriors and Crusaders will conclude the four game series on Saturday with a single game on Saturday beginning at noon.
