SEATTLE -- In her final season of eligibility in any sport at Cal State Stanislaus,
April Montgomery is attempting to make a splash exit.
The senior from San Diego, who transferred from Sonoma State after it cut its cross country program, ran a personal best and a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:14.34 to win the 800-meter run at the UW Indoor Open at Dempsey Indoor.
The time surpasses the qualifying standard of 2:16.50, which is currently 18th in NCAA Division II. She now joins two Warriors pole vaulters as possible athletes competing at the National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on March 12-13.
"I am very proud of April. Right before the race I told her to focus on the win and to go after it and that is exactly what she did," distance coach Diljeet Taylor said.
Montgomery has been a Warrior since 2007 when she transferred from Sonoma State. She has competed in cross country, outdoor and indoor track and field.
Rubye Foldager finished fourth in her section of the 800-meter in 2:22.63 while her sister
Denali Foldager won her heat of the mile-run in 5:22.49.
In pole vault,
Alycia Wagner improved on her height on Sunday with a 11-9 3/4 to move her up to 13th in the country. She joins
Annie Burlingham on the pole vault list with Burlingham an automatic qualifier in the event when she cleared 12-8 on Feb. 5 in Fresno. Burlingham also cleared 11-9 3/4 on Sunday.
Other results include Jeni Cuha set a personal best in the shot put and finished seventh in the event with a toss of 40-feet while Britnie Cooksey was 11th in her flight of the long jump with a leap of 15-11 3/4.
