Men's Basketball Coach Reynolds battling Parkinson's Disease

TURLOCK — Stanislaus State men's basketball coach Larry Reynolds announced today that he has been battling Parkinson's disease for several years, but will remain with the Warriors as co-head coach.

Reynolds, who has been Stan State's head coach since 2009, made the announcement with Stan State Athletics Director Mike Matoso simultaneous to Paul Trevor being introduced as the Warriors' co-head coach. The plan is for Trevor to eventually take the program's helm.

"Having been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease a few years ago, we felt it was in the best interest of the program to add another coach to the staff in the event I couldn't fulfill my duties and eventually to take over the program," Reynolds said. "Paul Trevor is the perfect addition to our staff to fulfill that role.

"I want to thank everyone for their support while I continue my battle with Parkinson's disease."

According to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Parkinson's is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, with symptoms that continue and worsen over time. Nearly one million people in the U.S. are living with Parkinson's disease. The cause is unknown and although there is no cure there are treatment options that can help manage its symptoms.

"About two years ago, Larry informed me of his diagnosis," Matoso said. "We talked about it and came to this decision not only to create a succession plan but to publically address his disease. So today we are doing both."

In 2013-14, Reynolds coached the Warriors to their greatest season since becoming a Division II program in 1989, going 23-9, claiming the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament title and winning two games in the NCAA Tournament to reach the West Regional final.

He has been named CCAA Coach of the Year four times and National Association of Basketball Coaches District Eight Coach of the Year once. He is a member of the UC Riverside Athletic Hall of Fame and is being inducted into the CSU San Bernardino Athletic Hall of Fame on May 19.

Prior to being hired at Stan State, Reynolds had a five-year record of 63-83 at Division I Long Beach State. His 2007 team won the Big West Conference Tournament, earning the 49ers their first NCAA tournament berth in 12 years.

Reynolds was an associate head coach at UC Riverside from 1979-95, winning eight CCAA titles and advancing to the NCAA tournament 10 times, including three Elite Eight appearances. In 1994, UCR advanced to the national championship game. During the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons, Reynolds served as an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco.

Reynolds played at UC Riverside where he was a conference most valuable player in basketball. He graduated from UCR with a degree in urban studies in 1976 and later earned his master's degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 1993.
