The arena on the campus of California State University Stanislaus is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as the Department of Kinesiology.
Also within the Arena is the Athletics Training Room and multiple team locker rooms for basketball, volleyball and softball teams.
Adjacent to the Arena, originally called the Field House, is home to the offices of Kinesiology professors and the Warrior Fitness Center, as well as a full-size swimming pool.
With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, Warrior student-athletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.
The Arena has also hosted a number of tournaments, high school basketball games, Master's hooding ceremonies, science fairs and business/career fairs. It is also a regular summer home for JAMZ cheerleading camps.
From Warrior Arena to Fitzpatrick Arena
On the first day of basketball practices for the 2010-11 season, new letters were installed on the building, renaming the gym to Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
The arena was renamed for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks contributed $500,000 to the University in 2009. As a result, the California State University Board of Trustees has approved, at the recommendation of University President Ham Shirvani, that the campus’ Warrior Arena be renamed the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Fitzpatrick Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support.
In 1999, the gymnasium took on the name Warrior Arena, 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus.
Hanny Way
Also in the Fall of 2009, the walk-way leading up to the Arena was named Hanny Way, in honor of Jim Hanny, who had been involved with CSU Stanislaus athletics since 1966. In 42 years of service at CSU Stanislaus, Hanny has served as the athletics director, chairman of physical education, coached basketball, golf, track & field, cross country and baseball.
Hanny led the Warriors to 12 national championships and is a member of five different Athletics Halls of Fame. |
