TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team used another balanced attack and put on a second-half surge as the Warriors defeated American Sports University, 96-74, Friday night at Warrior Arena.

In front of a loud homecoming student crowd of 881, the Warriors had five players in double-digits in scoring to improve to 2-0 on the season. Matt Ibewiro had 17 points and nine rebounds, plus two block shots to lead the team.

Jordan Stokes, who had 17 points in Tuesday night's win over Cal Maritime, had 14 points with eight rebounds. Myles Green and Julian Williams each had 11 points while Casey Cutts added 10 with four assists.

For the second straight game, Stanislaus made nine three-pointers, led by Williams with three. The Warriors also out-rebounded ASU, 47-23 and out-shot the Eagles 58.7 percent to 40 percent for the game.

While all statistics show a blow-out from the start, ASU actually hung in with the Warriors for most of the contest. The second-year program from San Bernardino was up to the challenge early until a 10-2 run late in the first half that gave Stanislaus an 18-point lead at 3:46 to go on a Cutts trey.

The Eagles would pull within 10, however, going into intermission at 55-45.

Led by Alvin Wright, who finished with 24 points, ASU again stay close in the second half and cut a 15-point Warrior lead to nine with 11:02 to go.

Cal State Stanislaus then turn it back on and scored nine unanswered points that was capped by a Green three-pointer to make it 80-65 with about nine minutes to go. The Warriors would not let ASU come close again with solid shooting and defense to pull away in the final minutes. After Julius Clark hit a three for ASU at 8:21, Stanislaus would out-score the Eagles 16-6 for the final margin.

Clark finished with 18 points with five three-pointers.

Chad Johnson chipped in nine points and pulled six rebounds with four assists for the Warriors while Frank Monge had eight rebounds and seven points in 17 minutes of play.

Stanislaus will play next weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, at the Menlo College Tournament in Atherton.
