Derrhea McLiechey ran a provisional qualifying time and received a top conference award as she led the Warriors women's track and field team to a successful meet at the 2010 CCAA championships at UC San Diego.
McLiechey clocked 55.45 seconds in the 400-meter dash to finish second and put herself among the quickest in the country as she has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. McLiechey, who also ran fast legs on the relay teams, plus a sixth place finish in the 200, to earned her CCAA Newcomer of the Year honors.
McLiechey's time is now the 16th fastest in Division II and according to head coach Geoff Bradshaw it should hold-up and be good enough to get her a ticket to the national meet in Charlotte, N.C.
As a team, the Warrior women finished higher than expected in sixth place with 53.33 points. Chico State edged UC San Diego 212.33 to 209.50. Cal State L.A. (101.33) was third, followed by San Francisco State (81.50), and Cal P oly Pomona (64). The Warriors finished ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills (50) and Humboldt State (47).
"We had many women with personal and career bests today, including some great marks by some of the freshmen," CSUS head coach Geoff Bradshaw said. "Like the men, they also gave it their all and I was really pleased with everybody's performances."
Also reaching the podium and earned All-CCAA honors were
Denali Foldager and
Alycia Wagner. Foldager came in second in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:54.13. Foldager, who had the country's 17th fastest time this season, finished behind fourth-ranked Megan Rolland (10:38.70) of Humboldt State.
Wagner, who won the pole vault in 2009, was third in the the event with a season-best 12-4 1/2.
Annie Burlingham also cleared a season-best 12-2 1/2 to finish fourth. Both pole vaulters improved on their provisional qualifying marks. Before the weekend, they were 20th and 14th, respectively, in Division II.
In shot put, freshman
Jeni Cunha turned in a big performance with a career best 42-4 3/4 to finish fourth. She missed the podium by 5 1/2 inches.
Rubye Foldager ran a 4:48.03 in the 1500-meter run to place sixth while sister
Denali Foldager had a 4:52.30 to place eighth.
Also with personal highs are McLiechey in the 200-meter dash (25.37) and
Rio Schwalbach in the triple jump (35-1/2). Both relay teams also posted this season's quickest times with the 4x100 team finished fifth in 48.26 seconds and the 4x400 team timing 3:55.04.
Also two long days of competition in the heptathlon,
Brittni Showers ran personal-best legs on both relay teams as well as finishing sixth in the 100-meter dash (12.80 seconds).
