Sonoma State defeats Warriors to extend winning streak

10/12/2007 5:10:24 PM

TURLOCK — Not even Friday's stormy conditions in the Valley could stop one of the hottest teams in all of NCAA soccer, as the No. 16 Sonoma State Seawolves won their 11th game in a row by way of a 2-1 victory over Cal State Stanislaus.

All scoring took place in the second half, which is also when the rain started. In a span of four minutes, Sonoma State jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Nathan Medina and Ross Middlemiss, respectively. Mike Travis picked up assists on both scores, and Middlemiss assisted on Medina's score. Eric Lafon helped out Middlemiss on his goal that would prove to be the game winner.

The Warriors continued to fight through the conditions and would cut the deficit to one in the 70th minute on a header goal by Dennis Wolfe, his first of the year. Freshman Matthew Santinello assisted on the play to pick up his second helper of the season.

The final 20 minutes of play were rough, as the Warriors played aggressively to get a second goal and the Seawolves tried to hold onto their lead, all in a muddy field that had players flying everywhere. The Warriors would pick up two yellow cards in the final 20 minutes. Sonoma State was called for 11 fouls in the second half.

Over 200 fans attended Friday's game despite the weather conditions. Friday marked the end of homecoming week at Cal State Stanislaus. The loss drops the Warriors' record to 3-9-3 overall and 2-6-2 in the CCAA with just four games to play. The Seawolves are now 12-2-1 overall and 10-0-0 in the CCAA.

Humboldt State will visit on Sunday for Senior Day during the Warriors' final home game of the season. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
