No. 16 UCSD hands Warriors road loss

10/21/2007 4:31:24 PM

LA JOLLA --- The No. 16 UC San Diego Tritons handed the Warriors their biggest set-back since Sept. 1 as UCSD defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 4-0, Sunday in a CCAA women's soccer match.

Kathy Sepulveda scored twice and assisted on another to lead UCSD as the Tritons snapped a two-match home losing streak with the win. UCSD improved to 12-2-1 and 9-2-1 in the CCAA.

For the Warriors (9-6-2, 7-4-2) , it was their second straight defeat to a top 25 team as they lost to No. 24 Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 on Friday. Win one match remaining on the regular season schedule, the Warriors are currently five points behind in the CCAA North behind Chico State, which won the North with a 3-2 win at CSUDH today.

A win or a tie in next Saturday's finale at Chico State is now crucial for the Warriors if they hope to make the postseason tournament.  UCSD is on solid ground to at least get a berth in the playoffs. That leaves two spots for CSUS, Cal State L.A., Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona all in contention.

In Sunday's match at UCSD, Sepulveda scored her first goal of the year at 6:41 to give the Tritons an early lead. Caitlin Ryan would add a score at the 26th minute mark and a second Sepulveda goal just before the half gave the home team a 3-0 lead at intermission.

Sepulveda then assisted on a Ali Lai goal at 54:32 for the final margin.

Four goals was the most allowed by the Warriors since a pair of 7-1 losses on Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 in Seattle. It was also the most goals allowed by the Warriors in CCAA play this season.

The important regular season finale at Chico State is Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
