ARCATA -- Cherie Early and
Melissa Phillips each scored a goal while the Warriors defense and goalkeeper
Jessica Sitarz blanked the Lumberjacks as Cal State Stanislaus defeated Humboldt State, 2-0, in a CCAA women's soccer match on Sunday.
With the victory, the Warriors are 4-4-1 overall and improved to 2-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Lumberjacks are now 3-4-2 and 1-2-0.
"The team competed really hard for the whole 90 minutes. It was nice to get a win but also great to played good soccer at the same time," CSUS head coach Gabe Bolton said.
Early, who was credited with an outstanding game by Bolton, got the Warriors on the board with her second goal of the year in the 31st minute to give CSUS a 1-0 lead. Her goal -- a lob-shot over HSU goalkeeper into the side of the net -- was set-up by
Tiffani Moore. Phillips then give CSUS the second score at 63:35 with a header from a
Jenna Kasch corner kick.
Defensively, the Warriors held the Lumberjacks in check, allowing just eight shots with three shots on goal in the first half. Sitarz, who picked up three saves, recorded her third shutout of the season.
"The back four and our goalkeeping was outstanding the whole weekend and it was great to come out with this shutout especially on this tough road trip," Bolton said of the defensive line of Phillips,
Jenna Coates,
Kaity Bojorquez and
Angie Leporini. "The defensive effort was outstanding by the whole team."
The Warriors will travel again next weekend, this time heading south to the Southern California Inland Empire to take on Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino.
