LAIE, Hawaii -- Cal State Stanislaus played inspiring volleyball and battled No. 19 BYU Hawaii before falling, 30-19, 30-27, 20-30, 33-35, 15-11, at the Hawaii Invitational.
Down two games to none against a team nationally known for their defensive digging game, the Warriors rallied back and dominated game three.
Facing match point at 29-23 in game four, CSUS rolled off seven straight to take the lead. The teams battled back and forth before CSUS took the set 35-33 on a Karly Van Foeken kill.
In the decisive fifth, the moment shifted back and forth before some CSUS mistakes and more BYUH strong defense needed the match in favor of the Seasiders.
Debbie Vander Schaaf had 18 kills for the second night and
Caitlin Steffeck had 13 to lead the Warrior attack.
Megan Loghry added 11 and Liz Cameron had 10.
The Warriors held their own defensively matching BYUH's digs and finished with 107 team digs. BYUH had 111.
Megan Britton led the Warriors with 35 digs and setter
Nicki Brown added 17 to go with 58 assists.
Amanda Pielstick chipped in 16 digs.
Noelle Filimoeatu led the Seasiders with 22 kills and 21 digs.
After the match the Warriors traveled to Honolulu to take on Hawaii Pacific at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the trip.
In the nightcap of the cross-island doubleheader for the Warriors, Hawaii Pacific downed CSUS, 30-23, 30-24, 30-23 as Cal State Stanislaus failed to play well.
As a team the Warriors committed 39 errors, including 25 on offensive attack and did not pass well in the setback.
Jen Gee topped the team with nine kills while Vander Schaaf and Van Foeken each had seven.
