Warriors CCAA opener ends in tie

9/7/2007 4:29:13 PM

TURLOCK —  The Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team opened up CCAA play with a 3-3 tie against the visiting San Francisco State Gators, Friday at Warrior Field.

The scoring started early when Jade Adamson scored her 4th goal of the season, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute of action.  Melissa Phillips cleared the ball, which put Adamson one on one with Gator goalie Sarah Baldares.  Adamson was able to get around Balderes and knock in the goal.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Gator forward Zoila Marquez scored just 54 seconds later.  The Gators would add another goal four minutes after that as midfielder Robin Bowman was able to put one through, making the score 2-1.

The Warriors were able to knot the score at two in the 44th minute of play.  Junior midfielder Tiffani Moore scored on an assist from Lisa Garcia following a Warrior corner kick.

The score would stay tied until Gator defender Sarah Whelan knocked in a goal from the right side off a corner kick situation with just nine minutes left in regulation.  However, just about four minutes after the Gators took the lead Adrienne Sorenson was able put one in off another corner kick, evening the score at three.  Neither team was able to score through two overtime periods and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Warriors had numerous opportunities to score as they out shot the Gators 15 to 12, and continued to apply pressure until time ran out.  “We created a lot of opportunities offensively throughout the game,” said head coach Gabe Bolton.

Despite playing well offensively and rallying twice to come back, it was the defense that let the Warriors down and prevented them from pulling out a victory.  “We need to be tougher defensively and keep improving in that regard.  However, to come back with five minutes to play in the game to tie the game and to battle in both the overtime periods really showed a lot of character,” Bolton said.

The Warriors are now 2-3-1 (0-0-1 CCAA), while the Gators ran their record to 1-2-1 (0-0-1 CCAA).  The Warriors will be back in action Sunday as Cal State Monterey Bay will come to Turlock for another CCAA match beginning at 12:30.
