Strong attack lifts HSU over CSUS in volleyball

9/8/2007 4:34:40 PM

ARCATA --- Humboldt State's East Gym is a tough place to win in any sport because of the travel and the close-to-the-action fans. Just as the Warriors volleyball team appeared to have overcame the environment in rallying to win game two and taking control of game three, the momentum shifted in favor of the Lumberjacks as HSU defeated the Cal State Stanislaus in four games.

Four Lumberjacks had 10 or more kills as they defeated the visiting Warriors 30-24, 28-30, 30-23, 30-14. With the win, the Lumberjacks are 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA while the CSUS Warriors dropped to 0-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (2-8 overall).

Olivia Solomon led the strong balance attack of HSU with 16 kills. Katie Norkunas added 15 kills while Danielle Wells and Megahn Berndt added 12 and 10 kills, respectively for the Lumberjacks.

Debbie Vander Schaaf led the Warriors with 13 kills and Nicole Musso had 11. Meghan Loghry had seven kills and Colleen Sullivan dished 25 assist to contribute to the offense. Libero Megan Britton had 27 digs.

After trailing for most gof ame two, Cal State Stanislaus rolled off eight of the last nine points, including the final seven to win game two 30-28. Vander Schaaf had a kill to get the side out and served three aces during the stretch.

In game three a late 7-2 run pulled the Warriors back to a 21-21 tie, but after a Lumberjacks timeout, HSU went on to take the momentum with a 9-2 run to win the set. Four consecutive Warrior unforced errors was a key factor and turning point as they never really recovered and lost game four by 16 points.

The Lumberjacks had a .467 attacking percentage in game four against CSUS's -.067.

Cal State Stanislaus will make the long trek back to Turlock tonight and travels to Belmont for a mid-week non-conference match at Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday.
