LA JOLLA -- A long bus trip to San Diego did not affect the Warriors' ability to compete as Cal State Stanislaus battled against No. 12 UC San Diego before dropping in straight sets.
The Warriors led for a majority of the match, but were not able to hold on to leads as the Tritons managed to get by Stanislaus, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19. Thursday night's match was the Warriors' ninth against a nationally ranked opponent this season.
Jen Gee led CSUS with 13 kills and nine digs but the Warriors dropped to 6-22 overall and 3-15 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UC San Diego remains in second place in the CCAA with a 13-4 record (19-5 overall).
Lianne Vicchio had eight kills,
Amanda Pielstick had 16 digs and setter
Nicki Brown had 26 digs.
Megan Loghry, CCAA player of the week, chipped in six kills.
The Warriors weren't able to hold on to leads in the first two sets as UCSD rallied late. Stanislaus led at 16-14 but the Tritons used a 11-4 run to close out set one. UCSD had trailed the entire way until a service ace that gave the home team a 17-16 advantage.
In set two, the Warriors led by six, as late as 19-13, but once again UCSD rallied late. Cal State Stanislaus led the entire set until UCSD took over the lead at 23-22 with a seven-point run.
UC San Diego was led by Rebecca Bailey, who had 13 kills. Hillary Williamson had 11 kills.
Cal State Stanislaus has two more contests remaining this season. The Warriors will travel to San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay next weekend
