Sonoma State spikes Warriors in three

TURLOCK — Kristy Sather continues to lead the way for the Seawolves as visiting Sonoma State spiked the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors in three, 25-14, 24-19, 25-16, to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play for both teams.

Jen Gee led the Warriors with 10 kills and seven digs in front of a Welcome Week student crowd of 211 in the Warrior Arena Friday night. With the setback, CSUS dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in league play while Sonoma State upped its records to 7-1, 1-0.

A strong first set set the tone for the match, especially on the SSU side, as the Seawolves hit a .348 clip on the attack to take the opener 25-14. Sather had six of her kills in game one before finishing the match with a match-best 14. Ali Walker added six kills and 11 digs for Sonoma State.

Attacking errors and serving errors continued to haunt the Warriors as they allowed a combined 35 points in those two categories.

Karly Penton and Lianne Vicchio each chipped in seven kills and Megan Loghry had six. Vicchio also had 13 digs with libero Megan Britton recorded 12. Setter Nicki Brown had 25 assists, slightly out-dueling her sister Lindsay, who sets for the Seawolves. Lindsay Brown had 21 assists.

Cal State Stanislaus will face Humboldt State Saturday night at 7 p.m. Humboldt lost to No. 25 Chico State in three, 25-15, 25-23, 25-15, in Chico Friday.
