CSUS drops non-conference match to Academy of Art

9/17/2008 8:24:35 PM

TURLOCK — Academy of Art may be a first-year program, but the Urban Knights have the personnel to compete as the visitors rallied from behind to defeat host Cal State Stanislaus, 25-21, 17-25, 13-25, 25-21, 15-8, Wednesday night.

Despite having five players with at least eight kills — and three in double-digits — the Warriors dropped to 3-8 overall and on a four-match skid heading into this weekend tough road trip to Southern California.

Jen Gee led all players with 16 kills, and a season-best .367 attacking percentage, while Lianne Vicchio added 15 kills and 12 digs. Megan Loghry had 15 kills and four block-assists and Angela Ohland contributed with a career-best nine kills. Karly Penton chipped in eight kills. Nicki Brown had 36 assists running the offense in four of the five sets.

The Warriors turned in a strong night on the attack with a .231 mark (59 for 130 with 29 errors), but it was the service errors once again making the difference. CSUS tallied 21 service errors to AAU's nine.

After dropping the first set, Cal State Stanislaus appeared to be ready to take three straight for a victory. The Warriors were strong in sets two and three, easily defeating the Urban Knights with efficient office. In set two, the Warriors had just one attacking error (.458).

AAU (8-3), however, picked up its blocking game late and behind the play of its two hitters rallied for the five-set win. It was the Warriors' second straight five-set loss.

Academy of Art, which started all of its sports programs this past summer, was led by Dan Yang with 12 kills. Kauwila Lavea added 10 kills and Levalasi Tupou had eight total blocks. Both Yang and Lavea each had three kills in the decisive fifth.
