SEASIDE --
Melissa Phillips scored her first two goals of the season Friday in helping the Warriors pick up their first California Collegiate Athletic Association win of the season, 4-0 over Cal State Monterey Bay.
The win was the Warriors' first in four games and moves their record to 5-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in CCAA play. The Otters fall to 1-8-1 overall and 0-5-0 in the CCAA.
The Warriors got on the board first with a penalty kick from Phillips.
Adrienne Sorenson was fouled by the Otters' goalkeeper inside the penalty area, setting up the scoring opportunity and putting the Warriors up 1-0.
Later in the first half, sophomore
Lisa Garcia buried a shot from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Cal State Monterey Bay pressured early, creating several scoring opportunities, but junior goalkeeper
Jessica Sitarz made several key saves to keep the Otters off the board.
"Jess was amazing today," Warriors head coach Gabe Bolton said. "She came up with three big saves early in the game. It was one of her best games."
In the second half the Warriors went back to work when Garcia fed a pass to freshman
Marissa Dunaway, who ran with the ball and buried a shot for her sixth goal of the season, giving Cal State Stanislaus a 3-0 lead.
The Warriors' final goal came courtesy of Phillips, who ended what she started by heading in a free kick from senior captain
Jenna Kasch to make the final score 4-0.
"Mel is a rock in the defense but she is also an extremely dangerousoffensive weapon," Bolton said about Phillips' performance Friday.
"It is great to get a win! But more importantly we played well."
The Warriors travel to San Francisco State Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff against the Gators before heading to Chico State Wednesday for a night game at 7 p.m.
