Warriors recover to dominate William Jessup

SEASIDE — It took the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors a little longer to get it going on Saturday against William Jessup, but when they did, they pounded the other Warriors in four, 19-25, 25-16, 25-9, 25-10.

Stanislaus returns home with a 1-2 record at the Otter Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay and will post a 3-4 mark heading into a busy week. The Warriors volleyball team will open the home regular season schedule on Tuesday with a non-conference match against Holy Names before hosting a pair of CCAA contests next weekend. Tuesday's match is a 6 p.m.

Lianne Vicchio had 12 kills and 10 digs — her fourth double-double of the year — and Jee Gee recorded 12 kills to lead the Warriors. Megan Loghry had 9 kills and three blocks and Karly Penton chipped in eight kills with three blocks to help CSUS. Setter Colleen Sullivan had 36 assists.

The Warrior let WJU — a team the Warriors saw during a scrimmage in August — have it easy in the opening set with four service errors and six receiving errors as William Jessup won 25-19.

After dropping the first, however, the rest was easy for Cal State Stanislaus as they rolled to easy wins. The third was especially dominating for the Warriors, winning 25-9. CSUS managed to put together rallies and held serve. Stanislaus built a 8-1 lead and led at 12-4 and 19-9. After a Vicchio kill to make it 20-9, two WJU attacking errors set up three consecutive service aces by Loghry to end the set.

The fourth game was also really no contest for WJU with Penton and Gee each putting away four kills to lead the way.
