SAN BERNARDINO — Hoping to elevate its play against one of the top programs in the West Region, Cal State Stanislaus was able to hang around in the first half. However, the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes ran away in the second half and routed the Warriors, 92-68, Friday night at Coussoulis Arena.
Cal State San Bernardino, the preseason favor to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association, turned a nine-point halftime lead into a 24-point win to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Warriors dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the CCAA.
Benny Koochoie led the Warriors with 15 points and
Michael Dyson had 12 points and five rebounds.
Matt Ibewiro pulled seven boards but was just 2 for 13 from the field for two points.
Brandon Curtis added eight points for Stanislaus.
Cal State San Bernardino had four players in double figures in scoring and was led by Brandon Brown with 16 points and 10 rebounds. CSUSB out-rebounded Stanislaus 51-32 with 19 offensive rebounds. Lawrence Tyson added 15 points for CSUSB.
The Warriors gave up a season-high in points in their biggest defeat of the year as San Bernardino bettered its scoring average from 76.0 points per game. CSUSB also extended its win-straight over Stanislaus to five games and has now won 10 of last 11 in the series.
The game was a tight, see-saw battle in the first half until San Bernardino used a 7-0 run to close out the half. A Reggie Brown three-pointer started the spurt and a dunk by Brandon Brown at the buzzer capped the run to end the half.
The Warriors got as close as 56-50 with 10:59 left in the game on a Dyson jumper, but it was all CSUSB after that point as a 18-5 run titled the see-saw the Coyotes' way.
The Warriors were playing in their first game in 20 days on Friday after last seen action on Dec. 13 at home against American Sports University. Their trip to Las Vegas for the Great Western Shootout was canceled due to weather and travel difficulties.
