TURLOCK —
Katie Busi had 17 points and 7 rebounds as the Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team complete the weekend sweep with a 61-59 nail-biter win over San Francisco State Saturday night at Warrior Arena.
With the victory, the Warriors improved to 10-9 overall and 5-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. It is the program's first 10-win season since head coach Sharon Turner-Dean's first year at Stanislaus in 2002-03. San Francisco State dropped to 10-9 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Against her former team,
Antwinette Turner netted 11 points as did
Lysandra Williams. Turlock native
Samantha Bertomen also chipped in nine points with three of the team's five three-pointers.
Desiree Butler and ZaLisha Oliver each had 10 points to lead San Francisco State.
After leading by as many as 12 points in the first half, the Warriors took a 33-25 halftime lead at the break. After a Turner bucket to start the second half, the Warriors led by 10. Then the Gators rallied for a close game. While Stanislaus never trailed in the second half, the Gators got as close as 47-46 as late as 5:58. CSUS would go on a 9-2 run for an 8-point, 56-48, lead on a Busi free throw with 3:20 to play.
In the game's final minute, a number of fouls and free-throw attempts were taken by both teams and when Butler hit a free throw with 12 seconds left, SFSU had cut the lead to 58-56, but Busi would make two foul shots and Williams added another to give the Warriors the cushion.
A major difference in tonight's game versus the teams last meeting was the turnover statistic. Back on Dec. 5 in San Francisco, the Warriors committed 33 turnovers — 17 in the first half — in the 57-53 loss. Saturday night, Stanislaus turned the ball over just 13 times.
After the weekend sweep — the Warriors beat Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night — the Warriors are now tied for sixth place with Cal State San Bernardino. CSUSB lost to Cal State L.A. 61-58.
The Warriors will remain at home next weekend with games against Cal Poly Pomona Friday and Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night.
