TURLOCK — Shelby Wong scored twice to lead the No. 13 UC San Diego Tritons over Cal State Stanislaus in women's soccer, 4-0, Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
UC San Diego improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, spoiling the Warriors' Grand Opening celebration of the Student Recreation Complex in front of a record crowd of 1,876.
Cal State Stanislaus suffered its fourth straight conference loss to start the season and dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
"UC San Diego played fantastic soccer and we made too many mistakes against a team of that caliber," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Sarah McTigue gave UCSD an early lead at 11:24 on a chip in on a cross. UCSD's second goal, at 40:28, came on a cross by Ellie Nevarez on the near side that went through the hands of Warrior keeper Mille Brown. Standing behind Brown was Wong for the easy finish.
Wong tagged on a second score of her own at 70:04 and Ellen Wilson scored the fourth goal after a scramble in front of the net in the 85th minute to lead the Tritons.
"We were very tentative in the first half which hasn't been the case so far this year," Bolton said. "I like the way we responded in the second half offensively but we need to play that way for 90 minutes."
Marissa Dunaway and
Lisa Garcia each created a scoring chance early in the second half but both shots were picked up by UCSD goalie Kristin Armstrong.
The Warriors will try to rebound on Sunday when they host new-CCAA member Cal State East Bay. Kickoff is at 2 p.m., following the men's match at 11:30 a.m.
