TURLOCK — Against the second-ranked team in the country, the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team started out hot before the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes rallied to sweep the Warriors in straight sets Saturday night.

Stanislaus sophomore Lianne Vicchio led all players on both sides with 10 kills, but No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino's strong hitting attack resulted in a 25-21, 25-19, 25-17 win for the visitors.

San Bernardino, the 2008 national runner-up, is off to an 11-0 overall and 4-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association start while the Warriors fall to 5-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Vicchio had her seven double-digit kill match of the season with 10 kills on 30 tries to lead the Warriors. Melissa Bishop added nine kills and four total blocks while libero Amanda Pielstick picked up 13 digs.

Jane Chafeh and Samantha Middleborn each had nine kills, Nicole Moore added eight and Ashtin Hall had seven kills for the Coyotes balanced attack. Camille Smith led with 12 digs and two aces. Middleborn also had four total blocks, including two solos.

The Warriors kept things close in the first set and never trailed by more than five points. Stanislaus pulled within one at 22-21 on a bad set by CSUSB setter Sara Hoffman. But the Coyotes rolled off three points with Chafeh's kill to close out the set.

Cal State Stanislaus had early leads in the second and the teams were tied as late as 14-14, but CSUSB went on an 11-5 run. Then San Bernardino pretty much controlled the third, hitting at a .500 clip (18-for-30 with three errors) on the attack.

Cal State Stanislaus will take a breather from the conference schedule on Tuesday when it hosts Notre Dame de Namur with a 6 p.m. match. The Warriors will result CCAA play next weekend at Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego.
