TURLOCK -- Under wintery weather conditions, the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team was strong in its effort to beat San Francisco State Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.
Three different Warriors scored goals as Stanislaus beat the Gators, 3-0, with part of the second half played in a downpour. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 9-4-3 overall and 8-4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors stay in second place in the CCAA North, one point behind Chico State.
Divisional leader Chico State's match against Cal State Monterey Bay was postponed due to weather in Chico on Sunday. Chico State, ranked No. 21 in the latest NSCAA poll, will host Monterey Bay Monday at 12:30 p.m. before hosting Cal State Stanislaus Wednesday afternoon in Chico.
San Francisco State falls to 7-8-1 overall and 5-8-1 in the CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus's first goal didn't even count when a
Kyle Cadigan header goal was waved off due to an offsides call. However, just seconds later, the Warriors got another chance, this time
Luis Guzman found the back of the net at 11:18, when he was set up by
Manny Avila who sent in the pass from the far side.
Settling on a 1-0 lead at halftime after out-playing SF State with 8-2 in shots and 9-1 in corner kicks, the Warriors needed less than two minutes into the second half for a 2-0 lead.
Andres Zamora scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year at 46:58. He was assisted by
Jio Santana and
Terry Gross after a
Nolan Holdridge throw-in on the scoring play.
Teams then battled in the rain which poured sideways with the wind for the remainder of the match.
In the 78th minute,
Victor Regalado gave Stanislaus a 3-0 lead after nice touches by Avila and Santana to put the match away.
A total of 39 fouls were called causing a lot of stop-and-play action on the wet field. There were 20 fouls just in the second half.
Cal State Stanislaus swept the season series over the Gators. The Warriors are also 3-0-2 in the teams last five meetings.
