TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills for the first time in 17 meetings Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors defeated the Toros 3-2 with Karenee Demery scoring the winning goal in the final 00:32 of regulation. Cal State Stanislaus improves their record to 8-2-0, 6-2-0 in the CCAA.
At half both teams were evenly matched at one goal a piece. Toros, Taylor Canatsey scored early on, but did not hold the lead for long. Alexia Poon brought the score to one all in the 32:00 from an assist by Bernie Bettencourt.
In the ninth minute of the second half Briana McClain overpowered three of the Toros defenders with her footwork to score the Warriors second goal. But within five minutes the Toros brought the score to a tie once again with a goal off of the foot of Yadira Gomez.
Demery had seven shots on the day, five of which were all scoring opportunities. Finally, in the final minute, everything came together with feed from Marissa Dunaway, Demery was able to head in her tenth goal of the season, just one short of tying the single season record.
" We showed a lot of determination coming back twice," Bolton added. "We battled hard and showed a lot of character and heart."
Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 5-2-1 in the CCAA and 7-2-1 overall.
The Warriors will be on the road for their next two matches. They will be playing Humboldt State Friday night at 7 p.m. and will be playing Sonoma State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
