Women's soccer adds three more to 2010 squad

7/13/2010 11:17:39 AM

Cal State Stanislaus head women's soccer coach Gabriel Bolton announced the addition of three players to the 2010 squad.  Joining the Warriors this fall will be center defender Salina Ortiz, forward Elizabeth Scherrer and defender Ashley Webb.

"We are very lucky to pick up these three late additions to our team,” said Bolton.  “I was very impressed with all three and I'm confident they will make an impact on our program.

Ortiz joins the Warriors from Santa Ana Junior College where she played both center defender and center midfield.  She was named Orange Empire Conference First Team in 2009.  She played her high school soccer at Los Alamitos High School and her club soccer for the West Coast Soccer Club.

"Salina is a very strong center defender that will bring a physical presence to our team,” said Bolton.  “She is also very technical with very good skill on the ball.”

Also joining the Warriors from the junior college ranks is Scherrer.  She comes from Sierra College in Rocklin where she was Big 8 Conference All League First Team in 2009.  She led the Wolverines in scoring with 14 goals.  During her career at Sierra College, Scherrer scored 24 goals and posted 9 assists.  She is the second leading scorer in Sierra College history.

By joining the Warrior Scherrer continues the strong ties between the Rocklin community college and Cal State Stanislaus.  Bolton started the women's soccer program at Sierra College in 1998 and assistant coach Adrienne Sorenson played her first two years for the Wolverines.

"Liz is a pure goal scorer,” said Bolton.  “She is one of those players that just knows how to put the ball in the back of the net.  I have no doubt she will be a key player in our attack the next two seasons.”

The third player added to the roster will be joining the Warriors as a freshman from Southern California.  Webb is a defender from Saugus High School where she was teammates with incoming freshman Emily Relles.  She helped lead her team to the CIF South Section Division II title her junior year.  Webb was recommended to Bolton by local soccer guru Dave de Hart.

"Ashley has terrific size and speed,” noted Bolton.  “She is also a very scrappy defender who isn't afraid to mix it up.  She has the ability to play any position in the back line and play them all very well.”

The Warriors kickoff their home schedule on September 4 against Western Oregon at 7 p.m.
