SEASIDE —
Karenee Demery continues to impress as the freshman forward scored two of the team's five goals on Sunday as Cal State Stanislaus ran past Cal State Monterey Bay, 5-0.
With the weekend sweep, the Warriors women's soccer team remains undefeated and improved to 4-0 overall to start the season for the second straight year.
The Warriors are also 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association — their best conference start since 2005, the year they won the CCAA North.
With 5-0 score also signified the continuing dominance over CSUMB as the Warriors are now 15-1 against the Otters with a seven-match winning streak.
On Sunday, Demery again scored the game-winner — her fourth this season — hooking up with
Allison Case to put the Warriors ahead just 13 minutes into the contest. Demery's second score came with Stanislaus already leading 3-0. In the 78th minute, Demery found the back of the net with the help of
Bernie Bettencourt and
Kim DiNardo.
“We played some fantastic attacking soccer today,” CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. “The movement with and without the ball was dynamic and really caused problems for Monterey.”
Demery scored twice in Friday's 3-1 win over San Francisco State, including the golden goal 36 seconds into overtime. The rookie now has six goals in four contests.
Alexia Poon scored at 38:41 to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Then at 73:45,
Alisa Barlow's cross found
Briana McClain who chipped it over the goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead.
After Demery's goal,
Liz Scherrer finished off the attack with six seconds left to play on a runaway goal. Scherrer had collected a punt by CSUS keeper Mariah Kessler.
“Marriah played with the confidence of a senior. She did a great job directing the defense,” Bolton added. “To limit any opponent to just one shot on goal for 90 minutes is extremely difficult. Our defense starting with our forwards were very strong.”
The Warriors out-shot CSUMB 20-4 (13-1 on goal) with CSUMB goalkeeper Andrea Davis snagging seven saves.
The shutout is the team's third this season and the Warriors have outscored opponents 12-1.
