FRESNO — After dominating for the entire match, the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team finally broke through in the 71st minute as the Warriors defeated Fresno Pacific, 1-0, to start the 2010 season.
Karenee Demery scored on a deflection off of a save and knocked it in in the top left corner to give Stanislaus its fifth straight season opening victory. It also marked the 11th consecutive time that the Warriors open the season without a defeat.
The Warriors have won their season opener -- home or away -- in 10 of the last 11 years with a tie in 2005. Thursday night's victory is also the first road opener win since 2001.
Demery's goal came at 70:56 when the freshman from Merced found a loose ball after a
Marissa Dunaway shot. Dunaway's attempt was saved by Sunbird goalkeeper Catherine Michaelis and bounced away for Demery to finish.
"Karenee created a lot of opportunities all game long," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "She jumped on a ball that was bouncing around in the box and slammed it home."
The Warriors out-shot Fresno Pacific 15-3 with an 8-1 advantage in the first half. Stanislaus had eight shots on goal with Michaelis recording seven saves.
"We created a lot of chances in the match and were really unlucky not to put a few more goals away," Bolton added.
The win over Fresno Pacific marks the second straight shutout recorded for the Warriors against the Sunbirds. Last year Stanislaus beat FPU 3-0 at Warrior Stadium. The strong defense and goalkeeping trend continued for the Warriors as they had nine shutouts in 2009.
FPU's playmaker Tori Alvarez was kept in check and was held without a shot.
"(
Bernie Bettencourt) had a fantastic game in the midfield and really shut down their playmaker Alvarez," Bolton added. "Our defense was composed all game long with no clear opportunities (for FPU) the entire match. That was great to see."
Millie Brown started in goal for the Warriors and picked up two saves.
Cal State Stanislaus plays its first home match on Saturday when the Warriors host Western Oregon. Kickoff is at apprpoxmately 7 p.m. following the men's match against Western Washington.
