Seawolves spike Warriors in straight sets

TURLOCK — In a quick three-set match Friday night, the visiting Seawolves were too strong for the Warriors as Sonoma State downed Cal State Stanislaus 25-12, 25-15, 25-17, in CCAA volleyball action.

Lianne Vicchio led the team with eight kills and Jaclyn Pinasco had 12 digs but the Warriors fell to 8-8 overall and 4-8 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The match lasted just about an hour include pregame introductions and a 10-minute intermission.

The Warriors will save their energy and try to rebound on Saturday when they host Humboldt State (5-10, 2-9 CCAA entering the weekend). It will be Dig for the Cure night as Cal State Stanislaus shows support for Breast Cancer Awareness. The event, sponsored by Nationwide Insurance Crivelli Agency and Associated Students, Inc., will also raise funds for the Bill & Elsie Ahlem Cancer Endowment at Emanual Medical Center.

Friday night, however, Sonoma State (14-3, 11-1 CCAA, in second place) was strong on all phases of the game. In the first set, the Warriors kept it close as late as 9-8, but the Seawolves went on a 7-0 run for a 16-8 lead. Then, at 17-11, SSU rolled off six unanswered points for the commanding first set win. There were five ties early in the first set, but Sonoma State never trailed in the match.

Sonoma State finished the night with a .400 attacking percentage. Keala Peterson led with 16 kills while Brooke Moore chipped in nine. Allyson Sather had seven kills. Hayley Ross had 27 assists and Taylor Krenwinkel led all players with 13 digs. SSU also had 10 total blocks.

Besides Vicchio's eight kills, Jennifer Marsh and Eva Chafeh each chipped in four.
