TURLOCK —
Austin Schwalbach and
Paul Oei made immediate impact for the Warriors as the duo hooked up for the game-winner as Cal State Stanislaus beat UC San Diego, 2-1, in the second overtime.
Schwalbach collected a cross from Oei on the far side of the goal box and knocked it at 108:01 to lift the Warriors. It was Cal State Stanislaus' second straight overtime win this weekend as the Warriors improved to 8-3-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Schwalbach, who is from nearby Atwater, and Oei, from neighboring Denair, had entered the match just 36 seconds prior to the golden goal.
With the win, the Warriors are tied for first in the CCAA North with Chico State's loss to Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday. Sonoma State beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday. Both the Warriors and Sonoma State have 19 points in the standings.
The Warriors have now won three straight after the incredible come-from-behind 4-3 win over Sonoma State. Cal State Stanislaus is also 3-0-1 in the last four matches.
Other than the penalty kick scored by UC San Diego on Sunday, the Stanislaus defense has not allowed a goal in the last 282 minutes since giving up three scores in the first half of Oct. 2 match versus Sonoma State.
Cal State Stanislaus had taken a 1-0 lead early in the first half when
Daniel Kuczynski headed in a
Schad TenBroeck throw-in in the 18th minute.
UC San Diego (6-6-0, 5-5-0 CCAA) even the score in the 77th minute when the Tritons were awarded a penalty kick chance on a Warrior foul in the box. Alex Portela converted on the PK score to tie the score, 1-1.
The Tritons nearly took the match at 105:32, but Sam Ball's shot hit the left post.
The shot chart was fairly even with Cal State Stanislaus holding a 15-14 advantage. The Warriors had eight shots on goal with UCSD goalkeeper Jesse Brenne picking up six saves. CSUS goalie Bill Hamelton had two saves.
The Warriors will go on the road next weekend, first at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday then at San Francisco State on Sunday.
