TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team were efficient with its offense on opening night as the Warriors handled Fresno Pacific, 4-1, at Warrior Stadium.
The Warriors converted on their first corner kick opportunity when
TJ Grewal headed in the score from
Juan Alvarez at 7:26. Then on their third shot attempt,
Manny Avila gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute when he collected an
Arturo Pulido pass for the finish just 10 yards out.
In the 38th minute,
Kyle Cadigan converted on a Sunbird turnover in the box just in front of FPU's goalie Steven Waite for an easy score and a 3-0 Stanislaus lead.
"I was very pleased (with the result)," CSUS head coach
Dana Taylor said. "(Fresno Pacific) is a strong team and I thought (we) followed the game plan. (The Warriors) were sharp on set-pieces and worked tirelessly for each other. It was a great start to the season."
The physical match saw a total of 43 fouls - 21 in the first half -- with seven yellow cards.
Cal State Stanislaus extended its lead to 4-0 inside the 58th minute mark when
Daniel Kuczynski scored his collegiate goal after picking up a cross from Avila.
Fresno Pacific managed to get a goal at 70:00 with a Bruno Pessoa score. Paul Islas was credited with the assist.
Warrior goalkeeper Bill Hamelton earned three saves in the match to pick up the win in the net. FPU's Waite allowed four goals in 66-plus minutes of play with just one save before being replaced by Andrew Costa.
Cal State Stanislaus returns to action Sunday evening with a 5 p.m. match against Notre Dame de Namur.
"Sunday's game is going to be one of the toughest games of year. (NDNU) is a mature team with a lot of success and experience they are bringing here. Our guys have to be up and ready for the task."
