Lianne Vicchio had 18 kills and 19 digs and
Jessica Lehner dished off 53 assists as the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team opened the conference season with a road win at Humboldt State in five, 25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 22-25, 15-11.
The Warriors won the first two sets, but the Lumberjacks rallied to force a fifth set with Stanislaus edging the Jacks. With the victory, Stanislaus improved to 4-0 for its best start since the 2002 season.
Cal State Stanislaus won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-21, but the Lumberjacks held court to force extra sets. The Warriors were leading 24-22 in the third but HSU scored four straight points to extend play.
The Lumberjacks won the fourth set, 25-22, to force the thrilling fifth.
In the fifth, the Warriors jumped out to a 9-1 lead after six straight points during
Melissa Bishop's serve. HSU rallied and got as close as 11-9 and again at 12-10 before Stanislaus held on for the win. After a HSU service error,
Andrea Fett and Bishop each put away a kill to end the contest.
Vicchio recorded a season high 18 kills and added 19 digs to lead the defense. The Warriors had 83 digs to HSU's 64. Lehner, who had 53 assists, also had 16 digs. Bishop was strong at the net with six total blocks with three aces.
Jennifer Marsh chipped in 13 kills and
Eva Chafeh had 11.
Humboldt State (3-2) was led by Oceana Matsubu's 18-kill, 14-dig performance.
