Box Score SEASIDE — The Stanislaus men just won't quit on Friday on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay. Twice, with time running out, the Warrior men netted goals to pick up three important points on the road.
First,
Danny Ochoa scored in the 87th minute to forced overtime. Then with about two minutes left to play in the second extra period,
Carlos Gavino knocked in the winner as the Warriors improved to 5-7-1 overall and 4-7-0 in the CCAA North.
The win helps the Warriors stay in the race in the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division with 12 points, as they gained three points on current leader Cal State Monterey Bay (7-4-2, 6-4-2, 17 points).
Cal State Stanislaus won on a Friday this season for the first time, snapping a five-match skid on this day of the week. The Warriors also swept the season series against the Otters as they also beat CSUMB in Turlock on Sept. 29.
The Otters took a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the match on a goal by Anthony Velazquez. But the Warriors regrouped and held CSUMB in check the rest of the match — for another 103-plus minutes, despite being out-shot by the Otters, 20-16.
Ochoa scored on a direct kick at 86:18 for the equalizer and forced overtime. Then, with 2:09 left to play in the second overtime period, Gavino picked up a ball from
Jose Rodriguez and flipped it over the CSUMB goalkeeper Evan Drake for the winner.
Clint Long picked up seven saves to lead the Warriors at the net.
The match was the Warriors' second overtime contest in back-to-back Fridays. Stanislaus lost at Cal State Dominguez Hills a week ago in the extra period.
The Warriors will try for another Sunday victory — they had three straight until last week at Cal State L.A. — at San Francisco State. The Warriors will also be looking for their first consecutive victories of the year.
