Warrior men win back-to-back CCAA contests

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Stanislaus mens soccer team won consecutive conference games for the first time this season during a key time in the season as they beat San Francisco State, 2-1, Sunday at Cox Stadium.

Willie Gomez and Zack Jens both found the back of the net for the first time this season as they lead the Warriors to a CCAA road-trip sweep this weekend. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 6-7-1 overall and 5-7 in conference action.

The Warriors now have 15 points in the CCAA North standings, just three points behind second-place Sonoma State and five back of leader Cal State Monterey Bay.

Gomez got the Warriors on the board just before halftime, at 42:05, on a play assisted by Josh Handley.

After, San Francisco State (3-10-1, 2-9-1 CCAA) got even in the 53rd minute on a Cameron DeJong score, Stanislaus took the lead and held on. Jens finished a touch from Carlos Gavino just in front of the net at 78:07 for the winner.

Cal State Stanislaus won back-to-back CCAA regular season matches, as part of a four-match winning streak, for the first time since nearly exactly a year ago on Oct. 12-14 against San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona. The Warriors did win three straight in the postseason in winning the CCAA title and the first round of the NCAA regionals.

The Warriors have one more road match, at Cal State East Bay, on Friday to complete this five-match stretch away from home. They will host Sonoma State next Sunday at Warrior Stadium.
