Box Score TURLOCK --
Clint Long played a stellar match as the net-minder and the Warriors scored twice as Cal State Stanislaus wins another Sunday match, this time over Cal Poly Pomona.
Manny Villegas and
Carlos Navarrete scored goals for the Warriors in the 2-1 win as they improved to 4-5-1 overall and 3-5-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The victory is the Warriors' third consecutive Sunday win during the conference season against four straight Friday losses.
While not a shutout, the Warriors have out-scored opponents 6-1 in three Sundays. Cal Poly Pomona avoided the shutout with a score in the 87th minute.
Long finished the game with a season-high seven saves -- many in spectacular fashion against Pomona's eight shots on goal. The Broncos out-shot the Warriors 18-7 in the match.
One of his best saves on the day came at 64:03 when Pomona's Ian Trantow had a point-blank shot but Long stepped up to challenge for the save. On the same play, CPP's Leonel Espinoza took the ball and kicked it in for an appearent score but the goal was waved off as Espinoza was called for a foul.
The Warriors got on the board first in the 14th minute when Villegas was at the right place at the right time. A defender was trying to clear the ball but instead kicked it to Villegas standing about 20 yards out to the goalkeeper's left. He sent a blast into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
In the 76th minute,
Jose Ortega's corner kick from the far side was able to find Navarrete for the goal.
Pomona avoided the shutout at 87:11 after a long pass from Bronco's own Ortega to Brandon Cortez for the goal.
Cal State Stanislaus will now have to turn into Road Warriors with five straight away contests. The Warriors will play Friday night inside the Stubhub Center in Carson against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
