Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO — A group of freshmen were making their collegiate debuts — some in front of their hometown fans — on Friday, but despite excellent efforts, the Warriors came up short twice at the Seaside Invitational.
Christianna Knutson, a freshman from nearby La Jolla, led the Warriors with 11 kills in the season opener before Cal State Stanislaus lost a 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-11) tight decision to Montana State Billings.
Paige Walker also had 11 kills,
Taylor Massengale added 10 and
Blair Ehrlich, who went to high school in the San Diego suburb of Poway, had nine kills. All three are also freshmen.
In the match against Montana State Billings, the Warriors rolled out six freshmen in the seven-player starting lineup. Setter
Hannah Green (42 assists) and libero
Sarah Crowl (15 digs) also started. Sophomore
Jordan Harris (from Alpine, 28 miles east of San Diego) was the seventh starter.
In the second match of the day, the Warriors lost in straight sets to host Point Loma Nazarene (25-20, 25-16, 25-22).
Ehrlich led the way with six kills while Massengale and Walker each chipped in five against PLNU.
Defensive speclalist
Crystal Tillett is also from San Diego. Tillet had 11 assists in match one and five in the second contest.
The Warriors will play twice on Saturday with a 9 a.m. match against Azusa Pacific (1-1) and a 3 p.m. date against Texas A&M International (0-2).
