Taylor Massengale and
Paige Walker each had 11 kills as they led the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team to a three-set win over San Francisco State Saturday night.
The win away from the Ed & Fitzpatrick Arena snapped a 17-match losing streak away from Turlock dating back to September, 2013. The Warriors also beat the Gators for the first time in 13 tries going back to the 2008 season.
Cal State Stanislaus also ended a current six-match losing streak with the 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 victory to improve to 2-13 overall and 2-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. SF State is now 7-9, 5-6 CCAA.
Massengale and Walker were both prolific in their attacks Saturday night. Massengale smashed a .562 attacking percentage with 11 kills on 16 attempts with just two errors. Walker hit .417 with 11 kills (24 tries, one error).
Lindsay Skadeland and
Jocelyn Cervantes each had seven kills.
Leading the way on defense was
Sarah Crowl with 20 digs and
Hannah Green with 10. Massengale also recorded three assisted blocks. Green had 24 assists and
Rachel Parsons 15.
The Warriors finally show they can close out tight sets towards the end. In set one, with teams tied at 21-21, Stanislaus scored four of the final five points for the win. In set two, at 20-20, the Warriors capitalized on some Gator errors and put the game away on kills by
Courtney Lewis and Skadeland. In the third set, At 23-22 with the Gators threatened to rally and tied the score at 23-23, kills by Walker and Massengale ended the match.
Cal State Stanislaus will be home for a pair next weekend against Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego inside Fitzpatrick Arena.
