Warriors still in CCAA postseason picture after 1-0 loss to L.A.

Box Score TURLOCK — The tight CCAA tournament picture is still not that clear after Friday's contests from around the league as the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to No. 17 Cal State L.A.

With Humboldt State losing its fifth straight, the Warriors remain just one point out of the top six in their hunt for a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament. The 2014 CCAA Championships will be held at Warrior Stadium, Nov. 7 and 9.

Cal State Stanislaus fell to 5-7-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the CCAA with 11 points - yet is still just four points out of fourth place (which means playing a home match in the first round of the tournament on play-in Sunday, Nov. 2). UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino are tied for fourth with 15 points.

The Warriors will try to take the next step and move up the charts on Sunday when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros tied last place Cal State East Bay Friday night in Hayward and is in third with 19 points.

Cal State L.A. (12-2-0) improved to 8-1-0 in CCAA play (24 points), three points behind leader Cal Poly Pomona after the win - propelled by a breakaway goal by Marvin Iskra in the 66th minute against the Warriors.

With some help from the defense, Stanislaus goalkeeper Clint Long picked up eight more saves to keep the match close. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Warriors 20-6 with nine on frame. Cal State L.A. also had 13 corners to the Warriors two.

The only thing settled Friday night in the CCAA was that three teams - Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State L.A., and Cal State Dominguez Hills - have qualified for the tournament with the seeding to be determined. There are two more regular season contests to go before the six-team tournament field is finalized.
