Warriors take on UCSD in CCAA Championship first round

The Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team visits La Jolla for the second time this season, this time in the first round match of the CCAA Soccer Championship tournament on Sunday.

CCAA Championships: The Warriors are the No. 6 seed and visits No. 3 seed UC San Diego on Sunday. The other first round contest is No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino at No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. The winners of the two games will join regular season winner Cal Poly Pomona and No. 2 seeded Cal State L.A. in Turlock on Nov. 7 for the semifinals. The men's championship game will be on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m.

Series Notes: UC San Diego had won two straight in the series until this season when the Warriors tied UC San Diego, 1-1, in La Jolla on Oct. 10 … UCSD holds a 10-3-2 all-time record over the Warriors.

Last Time Against the Opponent: On Oct. 10 this season, the Warriors played the Tritons to a 1-1 to earn a point in the standings. Rafael Chavez gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute until Sean Pleskow scored in the 63rd minute to even the count to force overtime. Clint Long was in goal that night and had three saves.

What's At Stake: The season. The Warriors must win to keep their 2014 season going. With a victory, Stanislaus will get a chance to play on its home pitch next weekend in the CCAA semi-finals with a shot at winning its second CCAA title in three seasons.

CCAA Championship Appearances: The Warriors are returing to conference tournament after missing out in 2013 for the first time in three seasons. This will be the Warriors' fourth CCAA Championship appearance. Stanislaus appeared in the 2006 event and played in the 2011 and 2012 tournaments. The Warriors won the 2012 championship in Carson.

Familiar for Many Warriors: A number of Warriors are familiar with the postseason as 10 current players were on the 2012 championship team. Clint Long, Brady Taylor, Josue Barajas, Gerardo Cazares, Jose Ramirez , Gabriel Benavides and Christian Madrigal all made significate contribution two seasons ago. Gavino was the tournament MVP in 2012 and Long also made the All-Tournament team.

Big Game Gavino: Carlos Gavino was a key player in 2012 as he led the Warriors deep into the postseason. The CCAA tournament MVP scored two goals and assisted on another in the team's 3-2 win over Chico State on Nov. 4, 2012, for the championship. Four days later, in the NCAA West Region first round match against Notre Dame de Namur, Gavino scored one of the three Stanislaus goals in the 3-2 win.

Ramirez Top Scorer: Jose Ramirez, who scored the OT game-winner on Sunday, continues to lead the team in scoring now with five goals. He had six scores last season and one as a freshman in 2012, giving the junior a total of 12. He is now tied for fourth in the CCAA career list and is just five shy of tying the scoring mark of 17 (Victor Regalado).

About UC San Diego (10-4-4, 5-2-4 CCAA): The Tritons beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0, in Thursday's finale to move up to the third seed … The Tritons have been involved in four double overtime matches in the last seven games, all of them resulted in tied scores … UCSD is 7-3-1 at home … Cameron McElfresh is third in the CCAA with a 0.68 GAA … Brandon Bauman leads the team with five goals and nine assists. The nine assists is the third best in the CCAA and just one behind the leaders … The Tritons will be making their second successive CCAA Championship appearance and seventh overall.
