SAN RAFAEL - The Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team overcame a not-so-good shooting night by forcing turnovers, getting to the line and converting on free throws as the Warriors opened the season on the road with a 60-58 win over Dominican at the Penguin Preseson Challenge.
Chris Read's layup with four seconds left to play was the game-winner as the senior led all players with 21 points.
Wes Bartole chipped in 12 points with nine rebounds and
Christian Bayne scored all eight of his points in the first half in his Warrior debut.
Clinton Tremelling, whose three-pointer early in the second half gave his team its biggest lead at 14 points, finished with nine points to pace Stanislaus.
The sharp-shooting Read, who had the second-best field goal percentage in the CCAA a year ago, made 50 percent of his shots on a night the Warriors collectively made just 33.3 percent. For most of the opening half, Stanislaus was in the 20s in shooting.
However, between forcing Dominican turnovers with some solid defense and just some bad ball control by the Penguins, the Warriors led for most of the game and held a 10-point, 29-19 advantage at halftime.
For the game, Dominican turned the ball over 22 times which equated to 24 Stanislaus points. The Warriors also went to the line and made 24 of 35 free throw attempts to stay ahead of the Penguins.
Still, Dominican rallied back with some three-pointers, including a big trey by Dominique Taplin at 1:07 left to cut the Warrior lead down to one, at 57-56. Dominican would eventually tied the score at 58-58 on a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left.
After a Stanislaus timeout, Read dribbled drive for a layup to give Stanislaus the edge. Dominican's Josh Ramirez had a decent look at a desperation three-pointer but came up short.
The four-team tournament play continues on Saturday with Cal State Stanislaus facing GNAC's Montana State Billings at 5:30 p.m. MSU Billings lost to Cal State East Bay, 86-80, on Friday.
