CARSON — The early-season rematch is taking shape nicely after the first full weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
After another convincing win by the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team Saturday night over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the showdown between West Region Championship game opponents Warriors and Chico State is set for next Saturday. Round one of the home-and-home rematch is in Turlock on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. inside Fitzpatrick Arena.
Both Stanislaus and Chico State will enter that match as one of the four 2-0 teams sitting atop of the CCAA standings.
The Warriors (4-2 overall) improved to 2-0 in CCAA play Saturday after the 67-52 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Chico State (5-2), Stanislaus' travel-partner in scheduling, beat the same two opponents this week and will also come to town next week at 2-0 in conference play.
Sharp-shooting
Chris Read again led Cal State Stanislaus, this time with 19 points and seven rebounds — both game bests. He shot 7-for-11 from the field to lead the team on a solid shooting night. As a team, the Warriors made 46.9 percent of their shots for their second consecutive good night.
Wes Bartole and
Tyler Barber both chipped in 11 points and
Alek Carlson added seven points to the totals. Barber ws 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arch and Clinton Tremeling was 2-for-2.
Stanislaus jumped out on top right away with an 8-2 run to take charge and pretty much maintained the lead in the entire first half. CSUDH did lead briefly by one point twice, but the Warriors held a 30-26 lead into halftime after a couple of Bartole free throws.
The Warriors extended their lead to 47-34 with 12 minutes left to play after a layup by Read but CSUDH made a little run to get within eight points. That's when Stanislaus finally took over with a surge. A trey by Tremelling sparked an 13-2 run for the Warriors to take a commanding 60-41 lead with 4:31 remaining.
Shaq Hunter led Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-5, 0-3 CCAA) with 11 points.
Before the Warriors take on Chico State next Saturday, they will also host Notre Dame de Namur Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
