Warriors beat CSUSB, advance to CCAA Championship game

Box Score ONTARIO — Marcus Bell scored 21 points and pulled 12 rebounds as the Warriors defeated No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino, 72-67, in the CCAA Championship semifinal game on Friday.

The fourth seeded Warriors now advance to the title game on Saturday and will face No. 3 seed Chico State on Saturday at 5 p.m. for the conference championship and the automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

Shey Mataele and Chris Read scored 17 points to lead the Warriors as they improved to 20-8 overall. Cal State Stanislaus, currently one of the hottest teams in the CCAA, has won six straight games and seven out of the last eight.

The Warriors jumped out to a 16-0 lead going 7-for-8 on the field. Chris Read opened with a three-pointer and five minutes in the Warriors were up 16-0 at 15:19 on a Rob Walters dunk.

Stanislaus maintained the double-digit margin in the entire first half with Bell and Read each scored 10 of their points in the first half as the Warriors shot 48.4 percent. Bell also had nine of his rebounds in the 20 minutes.

The top region team and CCAA regular season champion didn't go away. The Coyotes made a game of it in the second half and rallied all the way back to take a lead at 6:24 on a Jordan Burris layup.

CSUSB extended that lead to five, 57-52, minutes later. Taylor Bell's three-point started another Warrior surge. Then, another three-pointer by Read allowed the Warriors to take-over the game for good.

Read's three-pointer at 2:00 left gave the Warriors a 62-60 lead. Then the Warriors won the game on the free throw line as they made all 10 free throws in the final 70 seconds. Mataele made eight of those free throws and Bell had two.

For the game, the Warriors converted on 21 of 25 free throws.

Cal State San Bernardino (20-8) was led by Kirby Gardner who had 22 points. Burris finished with 19.

The Warriors and the Chico State Wildcats met twice early in the season with each team winning the home game. Stanislaus won on Nov. 16, 80-78 in overtime. March Bell scored 28 points with 14 rebounds that night. Chico State won the game in Chico on Dec. 14, 88-67.
