Stanislaus falls short in late rally against California Baptist

Box Score TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus men's scocer team once again had no problems out-attacking its opponents on offense but the Warriors came up just short in Saturday's non-conference match at Warrior Stadium.

California Baptist goalkeeper Ian Clark stifled the Warriors with eight saves as the Lancers earned their first win on the season to improve to 1-2-1. The Warriors fell to 2-2-0 before next Tuesday's match at home against Cal State Monterey Bay.

For the fourth straight match, the Warriors out-shot their opponents, this time a 18-13 advantage. Stanislaus now out-paces teams 96-35 on shots and averages 24 shots per game.

Jose Acosta scored his first goal as a Warrior in the 64th minute on a steal and breakaway to cut the deficit in half. The Warriors came up empty on some late surges while the CBU defense and Clark turned scoring attacks away.

California Baptist took a 1-0 lead just before half, with 19 seconds to go, on a Aidan Apodaca goal. The Lancers added a second in the 52nd minute on a score by Andrew Reveles ot make it 2-0.

The Warriors responded shortly by Acosta, when a CBU defender failed to clear away a ball and was picked up by Acosta for a 1-v-1 finish.

Stanislaus starter Clint Long picked up three saves in net.

The match marked the first time CBU has taken a match from the Warriors. The Warriors had won two previous meetings, both shutouts, 1-0 in 2004 and 2-0 in 2005.
