Box Score TURLOCK — Unable to cash in on scoring chances, the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Northwest Nazarene to open the 2014 season Thursday night at Warrior Stadium.
The Crusaders scored twice within a 5-minute window in the first half and held ground defensively to improve to 1-0-0. Erik Anderson netted the goal at 23:11 and Jaime Verdin followed in the 28th minute for the 2-0 lead.
Cal State Stanislaus out-shot NNU, 14-6 for the match and was 6-0 better on shots in the second half but came up empty. The Warriors also dominated play at the corners with 5-1 corner-kick advantage.
Carlos Gavino took charge on the attack with three shots but they were not on frame while
Jose Ramirez, the team's 2013 scoring leader, was held to one shot.
NNU goalkeeper Alfredo Ontiveros picked up five saves.
The Warriors look to rebound when they host Notre Dame de Namur Saturday night at 7 p.m.
